Life story
Mehdi was the father of two children: his 18-year-old son, Mani Shafiei, who, on the night of 19 Dey and without knowing what had happened to his father, also lost his life; and his 15-year-old daughter, Hasti, who was deeply attached to her father. In a single night, Mehdi's wife endured the devastating loss of both her husband and her son.
Incident summary
At around 7:00 p.m., Mehdi left his parents' home in Qaemieh Township. Before leaving, he told his son, “Don't go outside. One person from every family must die for this country to be rebuilt. You stay here with your grandfather and grandmother.” He went to the building where he was working. When he saw people being pursued, he broke up the bricks in front of the building so they could be used by the protesters and opened the parking garage so people could take shelter. Later, he and several of his friends moved toward the Second Square and took cover beside a wall. According to the account provided, a sniper opened fire on the group. The four men in the front row were all shot and killed instantly, while another person was wounded in the leg. Mehdi was struck in the heart by a live bullet and died at the scene. According to his family, his death was so immediate that he was not even given the chance to close his eyes.
